We were not casually touring colleges.
This was a full-on, slightly unhinged, spring break version of March Madness. Multiple campuses. A baseball game in Milwaukee. Too many hotel check-ins. And somehow ending in Indianapolis for the Final Four… where Illinois had made it all the way.
So when we got to the University of Illinois, it wasn’t some perfectly planned, slow, intentional visit.
It was fast. It was in the middle of everything.
And somehow… it still stood out.
If anything, that might be the best test of a campus. If it can impress you when you’re tired, over-scheduled, and living out of a suitcase, it’s probably worth a serious look for your teen.
First Impressions: Big Campus, But Not Overwhelming
You hear “big Big Ten school” and immediately think: overwhelming, impersonal, good luck finding your kid.
But Illinois doesn’t feel like that.
Yes, it’s large. But it’s spread out in a way that feels intentional, not chaotic. Wide walkways, open green space, and distinct areas for different programs make it feel more manageable than you’d expect.
You’ll immediately feel that balance between energy and space.
And if your teen is nervous about a huge campus, this is one where it might surprise you.
Campus Vibe: Focused, Smart, But Still Fun
There’s a very real academic presence here.
You can feel it. Students walking with purpose. Study spaces that are actually being used. Conversations that sound ambitious.
This is not a “we’ll figure it out later” campus.
But it’s also not all stress and intensity. You still get that Big Ten spirit layered in.
If your teen wants strong academics without giving up a real college experience, this is a compelling mix.
The Energy: When a Campus Follows You
This was one of those unexpected moments that actually tells you a lot about a school.
We toured campus… and then we followed Illinois fans to the Final Four in Indianapolis.
Or maybe they followed us. At that point, everything blurred together.
By the time we got there, the Illini presence was everywhere. Hotels. Restaurants. Walking downtown. Inside the stadium.
They showed up.
And not in a casual way. In a proud, loyal, “this is our team” kind of way that gives you a real sense of school spirit and community.
If your teen wants that big, connected, rally-around-something feeling, Illinois absolutely delivers.
Must-Sees on Campus
The Main Quad – Classic, open, and exactly what you want a college campus to feel like- Grainger Engineering Library – A must-see, especially for STEM-focused students
- Illini Union – The central hub where everything happens
- Memorial Stadium – Big school energy at its peak
- Campus Town – Where your teen will actually spend a lot of time
Lunch at Legends: Real Life, Not Just the Tour
We grabbed lunch at Legends, and honestly, this is one of those underrated parts of a visit.
It’s easy to get caught up in presentations and stats.
But sitting in a place full of students, hearing the noise, watching how they move through their day, that’s where it clicks.
Your teen can start to picture themselves there.
And you can start to see if it feels like a fit.
Academic Standouts: Quietly Elite
Illinois doesn’t always get the same immediate name recognition as some other schools, which is kind of ridiculous when you look at the academics.
- Engineering & Computer Science – Top-tier, nationally recognized
- Business (Gies College) – Strong outcomes and real-world focus
- Data Science & Tech Fields – Massive opportunities
- Research Access – This is a place where undergrads can actually get involved
If your teen is even thinking about STEM or business, this is not a backup school. This is a serious contender.
Town Life: A True College Bubble (In a Good Way)
Champaign-Urbana is built around the university.
Which means your teen isn’t competing with a big city for attention. The energy stays focused on campus life, friendships, and opportunities.
There are plenty of restaurants, coffee shops, and places to hang out, but it still feels contained and manageable.
For a lot of families, that’s exactly the sweet spot.
Scholarships + Admissions: What to Know Going In
Illinois is more competitive than many families expect, especially for engineering, business, and computer science.
This is not a last-minute application school.
And while there is merit aid, it’s not as predictable or automatic as some other large public universities.
So if your teen is considering Illinois, you want to be intentional early. Strong academics matter. Timing matters. Strategy matters.

Final Thoughts: The School That Shows Up (In More Ways Than One)
Illinois showed up for us in more ways than one.
On campus, it delivered strong academics, a welcoming environment, and real opportunities.
And off campus, its people showed up loud and proud on one of the biggest stages in college sports.
That combination matters more than families sometimes realize.
If your teen is looking for a place where they can be challenged, supported, and part of something bigger, this is absolutely worth a visit.
Even in the middle of your own version of March Madness.
