Episode 42 | Supplements Are the Game Now: How to Help Without Writing Them

The Common App opened August 1, and right behind the main essay comes the part almost nobody prepares for: the supplemental essays. The why us, the why this major, the tell us about your community, the quirky one. There can be a lot of them, and most parents have no idea how to help without taking over.

Here is the good news. The personal statement is the one piece of writing you really do need to keep your hands off. The supplements are different. They run on research, organization, and memory, and those are things you can absolutely help with, without ever putting words in your kid’s mouth.

First, what the supplements actually are

Supplemental essays come in four basic flavors. Name them and the whole pile gets less scary.

The why us essay: why this specific school. The most common and the most important. The why this major essay: what your kid wants to study and why. The community or identity essay: a background or group that shaped them, a close cousin of the personal statement. And the grab bag: the quirky one, favorite word, a time you failed, what you would bring to the dorm.

When your kid opens a college and sees three supplements, it is almost always some mix of those four.

A quick word on the schools dropping supplements

You are the researcher, not the writer. A why us essay dies when it is generic. It works when it is specific: the actual class, the actual professor, the actual club. Digging those up is research, and research is something you can do side by side with your kid. Two laptops, twenty minutes, three real reasons this school fits. Your kid still writes the sentences. You just saved them from a dead generic essay.

You are the memory, not the author. For the community and quirky essays, kids blank. They swear they do not do anything, which is never true. You were there. You remember. So ask questions, remember out loud, pull the material up out of them. Then let them write it down in their own clumsy, real, seventeen year old voice.

You are the project manager, not the panic button. Supplement season goes sideways on logistics, not writing. Sit down once and build the master list: every school, every supplement, the word count, the deadline. Then work backward so nobody is writing a why us essay at eleven at night on Halloween.

You are the honest reader, not the editor. When your kid hands you a draft, read for two things only. Is it true, and is it specific. Do not rewrite their sentences into your sentences. If something is clunky, ask about it, do not fix it. They fix it, in their words.

The one line that keeps you honest

If an admissions officer could tell a parent wrote it, you went too far. Research, memory, questions, deadlines, encouragement, all yours. The actual sentences, always theirs.

Why it matters beyond getting in

The supplements are where your kid figures out, on paper, whether they actually want each of these schools, and where they show a school they would truly enroll. That fit signal matters, because the school that believes your kid wants to be there is more likely to want your kid back. Doing the supplements well is not busywork. It is where the fit gets proven, in both directions.

If you want the calm next step each week, that is exactly what my free weekly newsletter is for. And if you want a warm room of moms doing supplement season right alongside you, come find your people in the College-Bound Parent Collective.

You have got this. Go be the researcher. Let them be the writer.
