The Parent’s Sanity Guide to Fall in High School

If you’ve ever found yourself eating Halloween candy at 9 a.m. while wondering how your teen’s backpack weighs more than a small car — congratulations, you’re right on schedule for fall in high school.

This is the season of midterm meltdowns, disappearing hoodies, and endless “Can you sign this?” forms that appear five minutes before bedtime. And just when you think you’ve finally caught your breath… the FAFSA opens, spirit week hits, and suddenly there’s a party, a project, or a college deadline on the horizon.

So let’s talk sanity — because we’re all somewhere between “we’ve got this” and “pass the wine.”

Here’s your Parent Sanity Guide to Fall in High School:

For the Senior Parents:

You’ve made it to the big leagues — application season.

Your kid has officially hit “submit” on their first college app (and maybe asked you for their social security number at 11:58 p.m.).

You’re tired. They’re tired. The Common App portal is tired.

Take a deep breath. This is the part where you cheer, cry a little, and remind them — and yourself — that perfection isn’t the goal. Progress is.

For the Junior Parents:

You’re living in the land of test prep, GPA panic, and looming deadlines that aren’t technically yours but somehow feel personal.

It’s okay to admit it — junior year feels heavy.

Everything suddenly “matters.” There are a million acronyms, and everyone has a plan (and a color-coded spreadsheet) except you.

Here’s the truth: your kid’s path doesn’t need to look like anyone else’s. One step at a time still gets you there — preferably with caffeine.

For the Sophomore Parents:

You’re in the middle of everything and nowhere all at once.

They’re confident one day, moody the next, and suddenly “too old” for trick-or-treating but still eating all the candy they said they didn’t want.

This is the perfect year for curiosity. A casual campus visit, a quick “what kind of school would you like?” question, or just noticing what lights them up. No pressure. No spreadsheets. Just clues.

For the Freshman Parents:

Remember when you thought the transition would be the hard part?

Now you’re watching them plan their first high school Halloween party and wondering when trick-or-treating with friends turned into outfit debates that make you question every clothing brand on Earth.

It’s okay. They’re figuring it out — so are we.

Freshman year is all about adjustment. It’s messy and emotional and full of growth (and probably glitter).

For All of Us:

Whether you’re hitting “submit,” hitting refresh, or just hitting your limit — you’re doing great.

Fall in high school is wild, but it’s also full of these blink-and-you’ll-miss-them moments that remind you why it’s all worth it.

So light the candle, hide a few Reese’s for yourself, and remember: this season — like every one before it — passes faster than we think.
