When we drove down to Gainesville for Admitted Students Day, it wasn’t just another tour to check off the list. UF was one of Jake’s top two schools, so this visit mattered. And let me tell you… I was impressed.
First Impressions: Big, Busy, and a Lot of Scooters
The first thing you notice? This place is huge. Over 50,000 students. But it doesn’t feel like a concrete jungle. Red-brick buildings, palm trees, and shaded walkways make it feel kind of classic and cozy at the same time.
The second thing you notice? Scooters. Everywhere. I swear every student owns one. Cars aren’t practical, and bikes work, but the scooter is basically the unofficial mascot.
Campus Vibe: The Swamp + All the Feels
We ended our tour outside Ben Hill Griffin Stadium — “The Swamp.” Even if your kid couldn’t care less about football, you can’t miss how central it is to campus pride.
Our guide was a senior giving her last tour ever. At the end, her parents and friends showed up with homemade signs to surprise her. With tears in her eyes, she told the group that UF had been her home, that she loved her time here, and that she wished she could do it all over again.
I stood there thinking: isn’t that all we want as moms? For our kids to find a place that feels like home, where they’ll grow, and where they’ll be happy.
Must-Sees On Campus
- The Swamp — even if you’re not into football, it’s iconic.
- Lake Alice & Bat House — thousands of bats flying out at sunset. Wild.
- Reitz Union — food court, bowling alley, and endless student hangout space.
- Southwest Rec Center — one of the nicest rec centers I’ve seen.
- Century Tower — classic campus landmark that chimes all day.
- Research labs & innovation spaces — easy reminder that this is a serious academic place.
Academic Standouts
UF isn’t just about sports and spirit. It’s one of the Top 5 public universities in the country. Big standouts your teen might care about:
- Health sciences + pre-med (UF Health is right on campus)
- Business (finance + real estate programs are nationally ranked)
- Engineering + computer science (tons of internship pipelines)
- Journalism + communications (great student-run media)
- Agriculture + environmental science (uniquely Florida)
- Honors + Innovation Academy (small, community-driven programs inside a big school)
Gainesville Life: Pizza + Pints
After our tour, my husband and I headed to Swamp Head Brewery. We clinked glasses to the fact that Jake had narrowed it down to two schools, and honestly, it felt like one of those “this is really happening” moments as parents.
We also grabbed food at Satchel’s Pizza — the funky, colorful spot everyone tells you to try. It’s packed with students and has such a fun vibe. Gainesville itself is classic college-town — coffee shops, music, and plenty of late-night eats.
Scholarships + The Grandparent Waiver
Here’s the perk so many families miss: if your teen has a grandparent living in Florida, they may qualify for in-state tuition through the Grandparent Waiver. That’s a game-changer.
UF also offers strong merit money for National Merit Scholars and high-achieving students. It can be much more affordable than families expect.
Final Thoughts
The University of Florida is big, bold, and buzzing with spirit — but what stuck with me most was that emotional moment with our tour guide. Watching her say goodbye to a place that shaped her reminded me why these visits matter so much.
We’re not just looking for a college. We’re looking for a home. And if you find yourself in Gainesville one day, scooters buzzing past and a slice of Satchel’s pizza in hand, you’ll see why UF might just surprise you too.
